Chelsea’s Champions League journey has come to an end after they lost 8-2 on aggregate to Barcelona on Sunday.
The English side faced a monumental task at Stamford Bridge this weekend after losing the first leg 4-1 in Catalonia.
Sonia Bompastor’s side were expected to produce a better display in front of their home crowd, but a woeful first-half saw them conceding three goals.
Aitana Bonmati received the ball in her own half and went on a brilliant solo run before thumping past the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
Barca added another in the 41st-minute, with Ewa Pajor getting on the end of an excellent cross from Caroline Graham Hansen.
Claudia Pina also got on the scoresheet two minutes later with a sensational long-range effort.
Chelsea managed to stem the flow of goals after the break, but there was no way back for them in the tie.
They held out until the 90th minute when Salma Paralluelo took advantage of some poor communication between Niamh Charles and Hannah Hampton to score the fourth for Barcelona.
Chelsea did eventually pull one back through Wieke Kaptein in stoppage-time, but that was no consolation for the hosts.
The Blues have already won the Women’s League Cup this season, and need four more points to wrap up the WSL title.
The Londoners are also set to meet Manchester United in the FA Cup final in May, meaning they are in a brilliant position to lift all three domestic trophies.
However, their quadruple bid has come to an end as the Champions League trophy has once again eluded them.
Bompastor’s side will return to league action on Wednesday when they face United at the Leigh Sports Village.
