Preview for Chelsea’s remaining December fixtures

Chelsea have recently faltered in the Premier League with back-to-back defeats to Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively and that has taken some of the gloss out of their impressive start to the campaign.

Still, they are only three points behind the table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand. The Blues will be aiming to bounce back before the turn of the year.

West Ham United (home) – Monday, December 21: The Blues have not enjoyed much success in recent London derbies against West Ham United. The Hammers just avoided relegation last season, but they have excelled under David Moyes this term and are just two points behind the Blues with the game in hand. The east London outfit did the double over them last term and it could be a testing challenge for Frank Lampard’s side on the back of successive league defeats. Chelsea have won just one of the previous six meetings against the Hammers. They have suffered three losses during this period.

Arsenal (away) – Saturday, December 26: At a similar stage last term, the Blues came from behind to register a 2-1 triumph over their London rivals at the Emirates Stadium. They looked all over the place during the opening half where they conceded, but managed a stunning comeback with goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham after the 80th minute. This season, the Gunners are languishing at the tail-end of the table with just 13 points and the Blues have an excellent chance to register back-to-back away league wins over them for the first time since 2009.

Aston Villa (home) – Monday, December 28: The Blues have a dominant league record against the Villains and they have won 10 of their previous 11 meetings with the only setback being a 1-0 defeat in 2014. On paper, they are definitely favourites, but it may not be a straightforward contest. The Villans only survived in the top-flight on the final matchday of last season, but they have experienced a huge turnaround this term. Dean Smith’s side have already registered stunning wins at Liverpool and Arsenal and the Blues will need to guard against the counter-attack.

The Blues are currently fifth on the table with 22 points, but they could drop a further three places before the end of the matchday. There should be a strong response after successive losses and Lampard will be hoping that his side can return to the top four before the turn of the year. The club will start 2021 with a blockbuster clash against Manchester City at home.
