Reports: Chelsea keen to sign Manchester United starlet on a free

Chelsea may have spent big on the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, but the next arrival at Stamford Bridge may be light on the pocket. According to the Sun, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has decided to pursue Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes, who is set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires today. Chelsea already have a squad brimming with young talent and the 19-year-old Gomes could be a valuable addition in the midfield.

The midfielder was reportedly offered a contract worth £25,000 per week, but he has turned down his offer, which even came with lucrative bonuses. It is almost certain that Chelsea may double the offer, as he needs to have a strong reason to come into a very competitive squad. Speaking on the possibility of signing the youngster, Lampard said:

“I can elaborate to the point that it’s never been mentioned at my end.”

Gomes has made just six appearances for United this season, but he is reportedly attracting interest from across the continent with clubs like Valencia and Benfica interested in his services. The continental interest should not come as a surprise considering that the 19-year-old is managed by super-agent Pini Zahavi, who has facilitated some big-money moves to Chelsea in the past. Zahavi also has a great relationship with Roman Abramovich.
