Former Blues midfielder has contract terminated after Coronavirus uncertainty

Former Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel has reportedly had his contract terminated only days after the Nigerian criticised the Turkish league about continuing to play despite the Coronavirus outbreak.

Mikel joined Trabzanspor last summer, signing a two-year-deal. He has appeared 11-times for the Istanbul-based club this season.

The 32-year-old took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the continuation of the Turkish season. Leagues across Europe have been suspended, with the premier league currently off until at least 4th April. Although in reality, a return date, if at all, is unknown at this point.

Support came from former Chelsea players, Radamel Falcao, and Didier Drogba.

Mikel spent over 10-years at Stamford Bridge. During that time he won a host of silverware – Two premier league titles, there FA Cups, One league Cup, the Europa league, and most notably in arguably his best performance for the club – The Champions League.

News of his Trabzonspor departure has been broken by turkish-football.com. It is believed he will return to London when possible.

What the future holds for the Nigeria international is anyone’s guess. Especially considering the current climate.
