Opinion: Perspective needed – It was always going to be a rollercoaster season for Chelsea, so buckle up and enjoy the ride

Last night’s game was never going to be easy. Many fans were in buoyant mood after the win against Tottenham at the weekend. It’s fair to say that tactically Frank Lampard did get some things wrong. Most of the players performances were also below par.

The inexperience showed, but you can’t take anything away from Bayern Munich. The Germans simply outclassed Chelsea all over the park.

Could Lampard have changed things? – With key players injured it was always going to be difficult, you can’t blame him for picking the same team that beat Spurs on Saturday. Most of those available lack big game experience in Europe’s most prestigious competition.

You can’t completely exonerate Super Frank and his coaching staff though. His own lack of experience was evident with some of his decisions made during the game. However, he is still only in his second season of management, his first in the high profile hot-seat at Stamford Bridge.

After losing Eden Hazard, and the transfer ban/failure to sign players in January. Lampard was always facing a tough task. One that has proved more difficult by injury problems within the squad.

At the start of the season, I predicted a rollercoaster of a season lay ahead. I personally felt a top-eight finish would be acceptable. Top-six would be great, but top-four would signify a great achievement. I also felt getting beyond the group stage of the champions league was the aim. Well, that’s mission accomplished. A domestic cup run is also a target I desired.

As it stands despite all the doom, gloom, and frustration of another defeat, I still maintain we are overachieving at this point. Although some of you will think it’s other clubs’ failures that have flattered us.

Last night’s frustrations will soon ebb away as we move forward to Saturday, and a trip to Bournemouth. Let’s not forget we were embarrassed their last season, falling to a 4-0 defeat. Lampard and co will be out on the training ground, having learned a lot from last nights defeat. Righting the wrongs will be the aim. As daft as if might sound, Lampard and the players will have taken a lot of vital experience from defeat.

Now it’s time to get behind the boys, not only on Saturday, but for the rest of the season, whatever it may hold we are all Chelsea fans. Opinion is a wonderful thing, a right we all have. There’s nothing wrong with voicing what you honestly think. However, asking for the manager to be sacked will help nobody, particularly not Chelsea football club at this point in time.
