Chelsea turn their attention to Belgian striker, according to Italian sources

Chelsea’s hunt for a striker has taken another turn. Edinson Cavani and Krzysztof Piatek have been the big talking points in recent days, but now another name to get a mention is Dries Mertens.

The Blues have been linked with the diminutive Napoli man before, so it’s nothing new. But with only days remaining till the transfer window slams shut, it’s another to name to get fans talking.

Mertens has been at Napoli since 2013 During his time in Serie A, the 32-year-old has scored 118-goals, in 300-appearances.

With the Belgium international seeing his contract expire in the summer, bringing him to Stamford Bridge is a realistic possibility.

The source once again is respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. The transfer expert broke news earlier today via his Twitter account…

Mertens would certainly be a different option to others mentioned. The forward is small in stature at 5ft 7ins. He possesses versatility being capable of playing as a winger, striker or as a false nine. The Belgian has also played a bit deeper as an attacking-midfielder.

Chelsea need another attacking option, and Mertens offers something different. Negotiating with Napoli won’t he easy, but if Marina Granovskaia can pull off a good deal financially, he will be a good signing at this moment in time.
