Chelsea getting closer to saying ‘adiós’ to experienced winger

It’s been a difficult season  for Chelsea’s senior players. Frank Lampard has put his faith in The Blues’ academy graduates as he looks to build for a bright future at Stamford Bridge.

Cesar Azpilicueta is being put under increased pressure by the impressive Reece James, and Olivier Giroud has found himself third in the pecking order behind Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi.

Another senior player to miss out has been Pedro. Whilst Willian has been in fine form, to keep his place, the same can’t be said of the Spaniard.

Callum Hudson-Odoi spent the start of the season on the sidelines with an Achilles tendon injury, but is now ahead of the 32-year-old for a starting place. Most notably has been the form of January signing Christian Pulisic. The American has scored five times in last three appearances, so it’s no surprise Pedro is finding action hard to come by. The Spaniard has made a total eight-appearances this campaign, although only three have been in the premier league.

Pedro has been at Stamford Bridge for over four-years, after arriving from La Liga giants Barcelona in August 2015. During that time he has amassed 191- appearances for The Blues. Scoring 42-goals. Many of those strikes have been important in winning major honours, including a premier league title, and an fa cup. His most recent major contribution was scoring back in May in 4-1 Europa League Cup final victory against Arsenal.

With the former Barcelona man’s contract expiring next summer, it’s looking increasingly likely he will be saying goodbye to West-London. Pedro will be able to talk to other clubs in January over a summer move, and it’s possible The Blues may opt to sell him during the upcoming window. Although, finding a possible replacement could depend on the club’s transfer ban appeal to CAS (The Court of Arbitration for Sport), which is being heard next week.

As far as rumours are concerned, Turkish club Fenerbache are reportedly interested, according  to Takvim. (Via Daily Mail) There are bound to be other suitors for a player who has won an incredible 25-honours following his spells at both Barcelona and Chelsea. Pedro has also seen success at international level, being part of Spain’s successive World Cup 2010, and European championship 2012 winning squads.

You can look back at Pedro’s Chelsea career as being a success. Costing only £19m, what he has contributed has not gone unnoticed. As The Blues look forward to a bright future, it will be sad to say ‘adiós’ to a great servant to the club.
