It might sound unthinkable, but with The Blues currently coping without their superstar Frenchman, it is certainly something that can’t be ruled out.
Since joining Chelsea in 2016, Kante has proved to be a star of the club’s midfield. His incredible workrate is second to none. Breaking up opposition attacks and setting things in motion for Chelsea to get forward.
During his three full seasons at the club, the diminutive midfielder has played a huge part in Chelsea’s success. Another Premier League winners medal to add to the one he won with Leicester City, sits alongside an FA Cup and a Europa League winners medal too.
This season
However, this season has not proved fruitful for the French international. Niggling injuries that first started to hamper him at the back end of last season, have sadly continued into this campaign.
Kante has figured on six occasions this season. A fabulous solo goal against Liverpool being the highlight, he also netted against Southampton. However, despite his absence, Chelsea have coped well without him. Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have improved immensely since last season, forming a very impressive midfield partnership. That’s not to say Kante’s defensive ability hasn’t been missed.
The Blues have shipped 17 goals in Premier League action. Kante’s defensive awareness of chasing back and almost acting as an extra defender has been Sorely missed.
Speculation over a move
The Paris-born midfield ace has been subject to speculation of a move away. Real Madrid and Juventus reportedly interested in acquiring his services according to Sport ( via Daily Mail) Although it’s likely The Blues would want a huge fee, especially in today’s market.
You could also argue that Chelsea don’t need the money after selling Eden Hazard, and being unable to reinvest it, due to the transfer embargo placed on the club.
Injury woes
Selling your best player is never something fans want to hear, but with a new age dawning at Stamford Bridge, you can’t help but wonder whether Kante’s niggling injuries could be sign of things to come.
At 28-years-old, with the energy he has offered, is it possible he’s slowly burning himself out?
Who will be dropped?
It’s likely Chelsea will want to keep the French ace. If they do, they will certainly need to use him wisely during the rest of this season. At the moment you have to ask where will he fit into the starting line-up?
It’s a long old season, so the midfielder will no doubt see action when he returns, but who do you drop? Jorginho is showing the signs of the playmaker Chelsea fans thought he was. Kovacic has also made remarkable improvements to his game. A battler, a true midfield warrior has been unleashed by Frank Lampard.
