CHELSEA v Liverpool: Preview

Date: Sunday 22nd Sept 2019

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Kick-off: 16:30 BST

A decent win over Wolves last weekend turned out to be a bit of a false dawn, particularly when we followed it up with defeat in our return to Champions League action against Valencia just a few days later.

Whether the players were naïve in thinking they could coast to a win given Valencia’s recent difficulties or they were just out of ideas in breaking them down on the night, either way it ended up being a bit of a lacklustre showing from us – and not one that will leave us feeling especially confident ahead of meeting a Liverpool side we’ve already lost to in the Super Cup.

Despite a bit of a surprising defeat against Napoli in the Champions League Tuesday night, Liverpool have taken maximum points in the league so far this season and look well worth their current top spot. We did take a point off them in this fixture last season but whilst Liverpool continue to progress under Jurgen Klopp, we are clearly in the very early stages of our journey under Lampard, who’s doing pretty well given the somewhat depleted resources available to him so far but you’d have to think he’d need everyone fit to take anything off Liverpool in their current form.

MANAGER’S VIEWS

Going into today’s game, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says “I respect him (Klopp) hugely and it was a nice thing going up against him in the Super Cup. He doesn’t mess about and quite rightly has got the success he deserves.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, says “Chelsea had some problems but they have sorted it well. I don’t think they expected [to lose to Valencia]. It reminds me of my team in Dortmund a few years ago. Really young but they only played because they were that good.

Frank Lampard did an outstanding job at Derby so I am not surprised by him at Chelsea. But it is a difficult league. I can see some people are not happy with some results but that is not because of him. He is a really good manager.”

SQUAD NEWS

For Chelsea, Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out and Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James are unlikely to return to first team action yet. Antonio Rudiger and Emerson Palmieri are doubts and Mason Mount (ankle) faces a late fitness test. N’Golo Kante meanwhile, could play a part after returning to training.

For Liverpool, Alisson and Nathaniel Clyne both remain out, Naby Keita is back in full training but doubtful for today although Divock Origi (ankle) could play some part.
