Another £35m midfielder targeted, with Drinkwater future in doubt

After spending over £70 million on the duo of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater last summer, it looks like we are going to be at it again this summer. Central midfield remains a problem at Stamford Bridge, with Bakayoko flopping badly so far, and Drinkwater hardly getting a game.

According to French source L’Equipe, we could target Nice midfielder Jean-Michel Seri in the summer. The Ivorian has been an exceptionally consistent performer in Ligue 1 in the last three seasons, and is also being courted by Manchester City. He will be available for £34.8 million in the upcoming transfer window, when his release clause will get activated.

Chelsea transfer news

N’Golo Kante has been our only consistent player in the centre of the park this season. Bakayoko has flopped badly, Drinkwater has hardly played on a regular basis, and Ross Barkley has either been played out of position or out with injury since joining from Everton in January. That’s nearly £100 million spent on player who hardly look like being long-term solutions at the club. Cesc Fabregas can’t play every single game in a double-pivot, and is especially found out when we’re outnumbered in that area of the pitch. Targeting Seri makes sense, as we need a box-to-box midfielder who can also contribute directly to goals. The Nice man has only scored once in all competitions this season, but did find the back of the net seven times last year.

Also, Drinkwater is growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of playing time, and could ask for a move after just one season in West London. According to the Telegraph, the Englishman’s hope of making the World Cup squad later this year is under severe doubt, after hardly featuring this season. Drinkwater has only started 5 Premier League games so far, scoring once. News of us keeping tabs on Seri have further threatened his position in the side. The player is slowly but surely starting to question if this was a bit too big a move for him, after signing from Leicester City in the summer for £35 million.

The Telegraph report also states that Monaco may be willing to re-sign  Bakayoko in the summer, but we are likely to give him a bit more time to adapt to the English game. Thus far, he has been one of our worst signings in recent memory, but Antonio Conte has stuck with him time and time again. Only time will tell if he will come good, and replicate the form he showed for the French champions last season.
