Chelsea at Euro 2016 and Copa America 2016

Chelsea may have experienced their worst ever season since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, but a number of key players still have the chance of winning a trophy. Both the European Championships and the Copa America start this summer, with six Chelsea stars jetting off either to France or to the USA to take the stage once again.

It’s been a gruelling season for the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas, but to end the summer with silverware would be the perfect tonic before the start of Antonio Conte’s reign at Stamford Bridge. But which players are most likely to get their hands on a trophy?

Euro 2016

Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard – Both Belgium

Dark horses in the last world cup in Brazil, Marc Wilmot’s Belgium have a legitimate reason to be excited about the upcoming tournament. In Courtois they have one of the top five keepers in world football, and in Eden Hazard they have one of the best attacking players around. The latter may have had a poor season by his high standards, but he is coming back into form at just the right time. His goals against both Liverpool and Tottenham are proof of that.

Belgium are in the top four favourites with the bookmakers at http://leovegassports.com/ and for good reason: apart from the current Chelsea trio, Belgium also boast the likes of former Chelsea men Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Christian Benteke in their squad for the tournament. Losing captain Vincent Kompany to injury was a bitter blow, but Wilmots will be hoping his young and talented side can overcome the loss of their inspirational leader.

Gary Cahill – England

People forget that Cahill, a £7m signing from Bolton in 2012, has won pretty much everything there is to win at club level. The Premier League. the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup. Now, Chelsea’s most impressive medal hoarder will look to help England win their first major title since the 1966 World Cup.

Most will write of Roy Hodgson’s men before the start of the tournament, and with good reason. Perennial nearly-men, England always seem to talk the talk but fail to produce when it matters.

The emergence of the likes of Jamie Vardy, Danny Drinkwater, John Stones, Marcus Rashford and Dele Alli this year will give England fans and Cahill optimism going into the Euros – but can they deliver?

Cesar Azpilicueta, Cesc Fabregas – Both Spain

Winners of the 2010 World Cup and the last Euros, in Poland/Ukraine in 2012; Spain remain a force to be reckoned with despite a bad showing at the 2014 World Cup.

Azpilicueta will be up against both Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran and Real defender Daniel Carvajal for the right back spot in Vicente del Bosque’s starting lineup in France, while Cesc Fabregas could find his regular spot in midfield under threat after a disappointing club season, despite the fact that he is one of only four players in the squad with 100 caps or more. The former Arsenal man is eighth on the all time top appearance list for his country.

With the likes of Andres Iniesta, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, David De Gea and David Silva in the ranks; Spain will be one of the favourites for the tournament.

Copa America 2016

Willian – Brazil

Chelsea’s sole representative at the 2016 Copa America in the USA just happens to be their Player of the Year last season. Willian was one of the sole bright lights in what was a dismal season at Stamford Bridge, with the 27-year-old instrumental in the club’s relative recovery in the second half of the season. The wide man also scored a number of superb free-kicks in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Brazil, despite their horrific 7-1 hammering at the hands of Germany in the 2014 World Cup, remain one of the best national sides around and currently sit seventh on the FIFA rankings table.

They will have high hopes of a ninth Copa America title, which would be their first since 2007. They may be without captain and talisman Neymar for the tournament, but to bet against Brazil would be a dangerous move – especially with Willian on the wing.
