Cavani: Are Chelsea Really In The Race?

The race to sign Edinson Cavani is largely reminiscent of the hare and the tortoise – and the tortoise will come up trumps again. Ok, so there’s 3 or 4 clubs with their eyes on him but the principle is the same.

So far, Paris Saint-Germain, City, United and Chelsea are all rumoured to want the Napoli striker in their frontline next season and yesterday there was talk of a move by Chelsea. Mere hours later we hear PSG have ‘edged ahead’ in the race with a bid of £43 million.

Of course this is all completely irrelevant anyway given Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis insists the player is going nowhere for a penny less than the £53.9 million asking price. De Laurentiis has clearly stated “Napoli is a very rich club and we comply with financial fair play. We don’t need to sell any of our players. If someone wants to buy Cavani, they must pay 63 million euros, net – not one euro less than 63 million euros. Otherwise we will be happy to keep Cavani, he has a contract until 2017.”

So really, we could all put in as many bids under that as we like but unless someone is prepared to offer the full amount, whilst it fills column inches for the press, it won’t fill any gaps in either club’s attacking force.

Where does the hare and the tortoise fit in though? It’s obvious really, Real Madrid will bide their time, sneak in with an offer for the asking price at the last minute and cross the finish line with their usual smug ease.

Blue is the colour is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
