Di Matteo On Chelsea’s Challenge

Ahead of our second pre-season game, Roberto Di Matteo already has his mind on what we need to do next season.

Not resting on the laurels of a Champions League win, the Chelsea manager seems set on making sure we don’t drop off in the league this time around, despite having 7 competitions to compete in.

Talking ahead of our game against PSG, Di Matteo says “Manchester City have raised the bar. That is our challenge, to make up the 25-point gap in the league.  They are doing what Chelsea did in 2004, in terms of how they have come on to the scene, signed a lot of players and tried to build a foundation. That’s the challenge.”

He has a point of course, because City had definitely splashed plenty of cash to get there, and whilst we’re no strangers when it comes to waving a cheque book in the transfer market, it’s probably fair to say City’s spending spree would make a kleptomaniac look frugal. Having said that though, sustaining success takes more than money alone – and United took the Premier League back off us after a couple of seasons, so challenge or not, it’s always doable.

Bring it on!
