What A Deal For Di Matteo Could Mean

So, the rumours of a one year deal for Roberto Di Matteo persist but there’s no news coming out from the club yet.  Are we to take the lack of news as good news then? Or does it all still feel a bit suss?

I mean, on the one hand, he did a tremendous job for us last season and most of us will welcome his appointment with open arms, but on the other, just giving him the one year feels a bit too temporary for a club that really needs to get its act together where management is concerned.  Of course, there’s also the cynical (or just realistic) side of me that thinks it’s all a little convenient with Pep Guardiola taking a year out.

The deal on the table for Di Matteo is said to be a rolling contract, so could potentially amount to longer than a year, so it feels as if the assumption is that if all goes well he stays and if not we’ll start the yearly hunt for a manager again next summer – and that’s the bit that bothers me.

Of course, you could say Chelsea are at least going about it with a bit more sense financially since it does away with the yearly pay-offs but whilst you can understand their lack of financial investment this time, it smacks of a lack of faith in the one manager so far who’s managed to deliver the prize Roman Abramovich has always been said to crave.

Maybe this season, Roman is looking for the silver to come gift wrapped though? So he wants the same treats to be dished up, just with better dressing this time? We all know that in spite of the FA Cup and Champions League trophies sitting proudly in our cupboard, we’ve been labeled football’s anti-Christ. So maybe his thinking is that with a summer stock-take and additional resources, the bar could be set higher (and we’ll do a little shimmy under it this time around).

Not an altogether unrealistic expectation given Di Matteo did somehow manage to make the proverbial silk purse out of a sow’s ear last season. But can he realistically create a born-again Barca or emulate Munich’s Messiahs at the helm of football’s number one enemy?  You can bet your arse everyone outside of Chelsea will hope not 🙂

TheChelseaBlog.org is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
