AVB Rules Out Alex Return

We could well start tomorrow’s game against Fulham with John Terry as our only fit centre-half but whilst many supporters question whether AVB should bring Alex back into the squad to cover, the Chelsea manager is quite clear where he stands on that.

With Ivanovic going off injured against Spurs and unlikely to feature tomorrow, AVB was asked whether he would consider Alex standing in and responded with a straight forward “no”.

Mind you, as we’ve already heard this week, the shortfall in defence may be fairly temporary with Gary Cahill in AVB’s sights. Although the Chelsea boss suggests we won’t put all our eggs in that particular basket, saying “He is extremely interesting, a player of course that terminates his contract.  But we would be stupid if we shortened our targets just to one.  I think you know that we will be in the market for a centre-half. It’s pretty obvious based on the fact that we’ve accepted Alex’s transfer request.  We’ll have to let the market open and then find out what happens regarding Alex. We will have to respond quickly in the market, not because of the urgency but because we’re willing to fill that position with one more central defender.”
