In spite of the press putting Torres on the market for us, Andre Villas-Boas has swiftly taken him off with the confirmation that the £20million price tag was the usual media nonsense.
He might be struggling to get off the bench with Didier Drogba’s return to form but the Chelsea manager says of the recent stories “It’s not true, I’m sorry. He’s not available at any price. Everybody wants to be involved more times but Fernando is also pushing for a place with Didier, who is on a good run at the moment. We always count on our players and we are pretty sure that when Fernando will be called up, he will respond with the quality and the talent that he has. It will be a question of time to when we see him back, maybe sooner or later – we don’t know. We just have to make the best decision for the team.”
Moving on to the speculation around Frank Lampard’s recent time on the bench and suggestions that this could signal an exit for him, AVB says “We speak every day. There are plenty of players who push for starting XI selection and Frank is not the only one. There are people making great efforts to get in this Chelsea squad. Lamps is, I think, one of the top five players most used. Every player wants to be involved in every game but sometimes it’s just not possible. I treat everybody equally. It’s pretty clear that everybody wants to play in every single game. You will find it from Frank but, if you interview other people, you will find it from (Florent) Malouda and (Salomon) Kalou and Paulo (Ferreira). Everybody wants to play in every single game and everybody pushes to be in every single game. Sometimes, it’s not possible.”
