Chelsea Must Not Give Up On Modric

Following the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku, Raul Meireles and, of course, Juan Mata this summer, Chelsea will no doubt have been reasonably content with their summer of transfer activity when the window slammed shut on Wednesday.

But there is one face who is not going to be appearing in a Chelsea shirt – at least for the first half of the season, anyway. It was reported that Tottenham had turned down a £40 million bid for Luka Modric on deadline day.

Undeterred, however, Chelsea will surely continue their pursuit of the Croatian when the window re-opens in January. Adding a player of his quality, experience and relative youth would be a huge benefit to Andre Villas-Boas’ squad.

Questions will be raised over the size of the potential transfer fee, but when you compare it to other deals that went through this summer it seems quite reasonable. It would even be fair to say that Chelsea have not seen the best of Fernando Torres since his £50 million move, but were still prepared to pay such a large sum.

Modric is one of the finest midfield players in world football at the moment, and brings something very different from what the club already have in the middle of the park. He is a player who likes to get on the ball, take on opposition and set up opportunities for his team mates.

Not only would he be the perfect foil for Frank Lampard, but at just 25-years-old, he is just the sort of player that looks capable of stepping up and being the long-term replacement for the England man.

Lampard has been a legend for Chelsea, but at 33, his days at the top of the game look numbered. Harsh as it may seem, he is nowhere near the player he was two or three seasons ago, and will probably become more of a fringe player in coming seasons.

And that is why Modric has been chased so relentlessly by Villas-Boas. Replacing a man like Lampard is never an easy task. There are few players in the world who can compare in terms of quality to the former West Ham man – and even fewer who will have the sort of Premier League experience that is vital for anyone stepping in for him.

Modric is perhaps most comparable to David Silva at Manchester City, in terms of his playing style. Both are small, quick players, with the ability to control the pace of a game almost single-handedly. Modric is a man who has the necessary attributes to transform a game that is winding down towards a draw into an impressive win.

Football betting pundits will agree that it is essential that Chelsea do not give up their pursuit. This is a top, top player, and it really would be reckless to let him slip off the radar.
