So, with Yossi Benayoun tweeting yesterday “negotiating with several team (sic) … news soon”, it’s no big surprise to hear he’ll soon be on his way. What is a little more surprising is that he’s being linked with a potential return to Liverpool.
He’s never really had a chance at Chelsea, largely because the Achilles injury he got just after he signed for us rendered him unavailable for the majority of the season, but it somehow still feels a shame. He hasn’t exactly left any of us drooling when he has played but I still thought he’d be a useful player to have in the squad. I guess at 31 though and with AVB wanting to bring other players in, even decent squad players like Yossi are regarded a luxury.
Anyway, it seems a return to Liverpool could release Raul Meireles – a player AVB is rumoured to fancy after a brief spell working with him at Porto. So, in spite of Liverpool’s preference for Meireles to move somewhere outside of the Premier League, Yossi plus cash could seal the deal. Either that or our Israeli midfielder could be on his way to Lille.
Either way a deal could be sorted as early as this afternoon.
