Ancelotti believes Chelsea are in with a shout

Although it is unclear what Carlo Ancelotti’s aim was, the Italian has sparked back into life only months after conceding that a top four finish was the goal this season.

With the games against their only rivals just around the corner in the title run in, Ancelotti may well have been indulging in a few mind games with Sir Alex Ferguson, attempting to gee up his players ahead of a crucial clash, or simply stating facts, but either way is a remarkable change of tune from a man hardly known for his outlandish statements.

“We want to keep the Premier League open until the last minute and have the possibility to do this,” the Chelsea manager said.

“We have to beat Manchester United but this is our aim. Maybe Manchester United will win the title but we want to fight to the last minute.”

“I know that Manchester United has experience and tradition and history to manage that pressure but for us it could be good. I remember when losing against Manchester United at the end of the first half (in the league game at Stamford Bridge) the gap was 18 points, To be three [points] behind would be fantastic.”

But one thing is certain, the path to the title is far from the smoothly paved road most have anticipated Man Utd to travel along. A glance at United’s run in suggests they may come undone along the way to Chelsea’s benefit, even if the free bet favourites remain the Red Devils.

They have responded well since their Champions League exit at the hands of their league rivals but that will not be enough to appease Roman Abramovich, who still covets the European prize above anything on offer domestically, and Ancelotti’s future may hang on the remaining games of the season.

Of course for a side that was at one point in danger of being cut adrift from the leading pack, overhauling Arsenal for second place represents a good display of character, and with Fernando Torres helping some recoup some free bets by finally finding the net there is plenty to smile about, although Chelsea and Ancelotti will still be wondering what might have be.
