Before our Champions League game against Copenhagen, Chelsea captain John Terry was saying our players needed to ‘man up’ and sort out whatever was going wrong on the pitch. It seems his words and possibly those of others might not have fallen on deaf ears either.
Whilst it’s fair to say Copenhagen didn’t put up too much of a fight in the first leg and we won’t get to play that sort of opposition every week, there did seem to be a bit more purpose about our play on Tuesday nightand Terry puts that down to recent criticism, saying “There is always speculation that it’s this person’s or that person’s fault which is complete nonsense. It is just important, and we spoke about this before the game, that we keep our unity. It feels like us against everyone and we need to keep it that way. The talk from outside the club does put pressure on us. We’re a big side with big players. Naturally there is pressure on every game, even when we’ve been winning because we have to continue that streak.”
And with us still sat in 5th place in the league, with a 12 point gap separating us from United who we play Tuesday, John Terry is adamant our players still have enough petrol left in their tanks. In fact, when it comes to our more senior players, the Chelsea captain sees them as more of a bonus than a handicap, insisting “Experience is a great advantage. We’ve been there, seen it, done it. It’s important. If you look at last year, we showed our experience in a lot of big games in the run-in, like away to Manchester United and Liverpool and won. They proved very crucial in us doing the Double last year. We lost experienced players in Michael Ballack, Deco and Juliano Belletti last year and when we go on a bad run people pinpoint the age and still say we’re an ageing side. But we’re no different to United and the sides around us.”
I guess we’ll see how different we are next week won’t we?
