Torres Countdown: And Now They’re Gonna Believe Us!

So, with the closing of the transfer window – and the potential signing of Fernando Torres – only hours away, whilst over here at Chelsea we wait with baited breath for news, what about the Liverpool? After refusing to believe any of the rumours coming out at all Friday night – at least until they read it on their own official site – what do they make of it all now?

I mean, we know despite their initial whingeing insistence to the contrary, their adopted icon handed in a transfer request of his own free will on Friday. Of course they’ve argued he was ‘tapped up’ but then you’d have to suspect that phrase is just lodged in their heads right now, what with all the Charlie Adam business going on.

So, can they see that having had every promise made to him broken and Liverpool falling even further off the pace than even we have, that Torres has every reason to want to leave? No of course they can’t. Rather than accept him staying would be expecting him potentially to do without any European games at all next season, they’re droning on about it being no more than a money move.

Are they serious?

Torres wanted out in the summer, he could see what he’d be letting himself in for staying there and he tried to avoid it. As we know though, he was begged and pleaded with, promised the earth and now somehow, the acquisition of Dalglish and Suarez is meant to be payment enough. Are the two of them going to get out there and deliver the title? A Champions League place maybe? Somehow I think it’ll take more than that.

And whilst we’ve been through a decidedly dodgy patch, whether the dippers like it or not (and I suspect not), we’re still the current Champions and FA Cup holders. So they can point to the fact that we have older players who may not be around for as long as Torres might be but they’re still a better quality than he’s used to. And they can whinge about the money as much as they like but the bottom line is, we have a bit more ambition than Thursday nights on Channel 5 – and clearly so does Torres.

Blue is the colour

TheChelseaBlog.org is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
