Frank Lampard has been a key player at Chelsea for a fair bit of time now, so to imagine him not being part of our first team set-up is a bit daunting. Mind you, if we’d had to imagine it a year ago – before we’d had to manage without him for a significant period of time and before we’d seen McEachran in action, it would have been a lot more disheartening.
Fortunately, we have seen McEachran and we know what he’s capable of. We’ve seen the defence splitting passes, the energy and creativity he brings, the passing, touch and technique that, even at just 17, the word impressive doesn’t quite do justice. And suddenly, the idea of Lampard eventually being replaced – particularly if it is by McEachran, doesn’t seem quite so unthinkable after all.
At 32, Lampard knows he won’t be playing at the same level much longer but that doesn’t mean he won’t still have an influence on what’s going on, particularly when it comes to his successor it seems.
Having watched McEachran make his first steps towards taking over the reins, Frank Lampard says “Other clubs show great examples of that with players like Ryan Giggs helping people around them and you do have to take that responsibility on. Particularly with young Josh coming into midfield it is quite a nice responsibility. He is going to be a top player and it is enjoyable to try to help him. I enjoy playing with the young players because they bring a real freshness into the team and into training. Josh has outstanding ability so although I talk to him to try to help him, probably very soon he will be helping me.”
He’s not far wrong either.
