Ivanovic one of the stars of the season

Chelsea fans may not have had a great deal to cheer about over the past couple of months but there is one man who has provided the Blues with reason to smile, even in the darkest of times. That man is none other than Branislav Ivanovic. The defender scored one against Blackburn at Stamford Bridge this weekend and set up another as Chelsea put their poor run of form behind them to record a crucial league win, one which the football odds show has kept them in the title race.
Ivanovic wasn’t exactly a household name when he arrived in England from Russia, where he played with Lokomotiv Moscow, and even several months after his arrival many Chelsea fans didn’t know who the player was.

However, when Ivanovic did break into the Chelsea first team, he quickly pushed forward his claim for a position in the starting line-up with a run of decent performances in defence, with a few goals an added bonus for Blues fans. Ivanovic is clearly a man who boasts versatility as one of his greatest attributes, with a move to central defence to cover for the injured Alex this season seeming to cause him no problems.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that the player’s determination and spirit is second to none and this is a man who seems to really want to play for the team’s cause above any concerns of individual recognition. Although the football betting suggests Chelsea should be doing better than they are, the defender’s performances show there are some bright spots.

However, with Ivanovic a player already named in last year’s PFA Team of the Year, it’s clear that his talents are being recognised by those who play alongside him (apparently many of the Chelsea players view him as the best player in the squad) and against him, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he starts to earn the same sort of plaudits that the likes of Arsenal’s Samir Nasri have been attracting this season. Chelsea fans will just be hoping that the current contract extension talks between club and player come to a satisfactory resolution.
