We might only have got a point at WHL but in some respects it felt more – and probably should have been – because we deserved more.
It’s been a while since we could really say that and whilst I could have personally kicked Drogba’s greedy arse all the way down the King’s Road myself when he missed the penalty, in a strange way, I still felt a lot less gutted at the end of this game than any of the others we’ve dropped points in this season.
Maybe not so strange really though because John Terry summed my feelings up perfectly – and no doubt those of the majority – saying after the game “That’s more like the Chelsea we all know. I think we’re back to normal. In the second half we had the hunger, spirit and determination and we pressed a lot better. That’s what we want from a Chelsea side. You can lose or draw games but when you don’t see the passion, that’s what hurts and we’d all admit that’s been lacking. Hopefully, it’s back now. I never doubted my players, the manager or the football club. Nothing has changed from last year. He brought in one or two players and some went but we won the Double and were the best team by a long way. Nobody is going particularly well and if we can do well over Christmas we have a good chance.”
And for me, he hits the nail on the head. I couldn’t give a toss (well ok, maybe that’s exaggerating) if we have to draw or even lose, but what I can’t accept is when we do it without a fight.
Every side goes through a dodgy spell where results – and the gods – go against them, but for whatever reason, our players let their heads go down and played like a side already relegated. And now, whether Terry’s suggestion about us being ‘back to normal’ is true or whether he’s just hoping it is, they definitely have a debt to repay the supporters either way, so let’s hope it’s a Happy Christmas eh?
