There might have been plenty of p*** taking aimed in Manchester United’s direction when Wayne Rooney originally dropped the bombshell about wanting to leave but now that he’s decided he’s happy with his pay rise he really loves United after all, John Terry thinks the joke could actually be on everyone else.
Whether Rooney ever really planned to leave United is debatable and possibly something we’ll never really know until we read it in an autobiography but what we do know is that with a new deal worth something like £190k a week, maybe more – depending on what source you believe, he’s going nowhere for a while.
John Terry knows all about how valued a new deal can make a player feel, having gone through his own will-he-won’t-he-sign saga not so long ago and he believes the effect this will have at United, makes Rooney worth every penny.
Of his England team-mate, the Chelsea captain says “He’s massive for Man United. It’s unfortunate for everybody else (that he has re-signed), because Wayne is probably the best young player in the world and no doubt he’ll get his form back and it’ll all be forgotten. But whatever he gets, he deserves every single penny. I think Wayne staying will boost them and make it harder for us. On the back of what has happened United will probably go and spend in January and at the end of the season. The fact that clubs haven’t been buying because of what’s happened financially in the world has maybe helped Chelsea in the last few years. Wazza staying is massive for them.”
Certainly Rooney’s a player you’d rather have playing for you than against you and remembering back to the effect Frank Lampard’s new deal had on his form, particularly after the questions it raised about his commitment, I’ve got a horrible feeling John Terry’s absolutely right.
