Chelsea still rightful favourites

After such an action packed start to the season it was unusual for Blues fans to taste defeat twice in four days.

The loss to Newcastle was a Carling Cup betting upset, but given it was largely a youth team the defeat should not be seen as a disaster – the Carling Cup is clearly not high on their priorities this campaign.

The 1-0 reverse up at Man City was more frustrating for Chelsea supporters as it lost them their 100 per cent record in the Premier League.

But given City’s spending this summer there is no shame in the loss, as Roberto Mancini’s men look to be well equipped for a challenge at the top of the Premier League table this year. It also took a good finish from Carlos Tevez to split the two teams.

The pain of defeat was also eased 24 hours later when Man United failed to capitalise on the slip up with a draw at Bolton.

Their second draw on the road this season suggest United are more fallible in recent years, which can only benefit Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who sit three points clear with a hefty plus 19 goal difference and they are still Premier League favourites after all.

The main stumbling block could be injuries, with Frank Lampard’s extended absence merely adding to the Blues woes. Yossi Benayoun and forwards Gael Kakuta and Salomon Kalou limped off in the Newcastle game, with John Terry also struggling to reach match fitness.

However, there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings and we coped in their team-mates absence against Marseille in the Champions League, so I’m sure weeks like that one will be a rare occurrence at Stamford Bridge this season.
