After England enjoyed comfortable victories over Bulgaria and Switzerland, John Terry may be forced to battle hard to regain his place in the national side.
The defender, and ex-England captain, was forced to miss the most recent international games through injury and has had to watch as Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott all managed to impress in his absence. With his understudies coming in and doing a good job, Terry may not be the automatic choice he once was.
Although this would be an annoyance for some players, Terry should react positively to it and Chelsea could benefit in the coming weeks. His determination to regain his England spot should lead to him upping his game at club level. Chelsea are already Betfair Football tips for the title, and if their leading stars play with ever more fire in their bellies then the side could really dominate the league this season.
Although Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand is in a similar position to Terry, he is likely to be fairly confident that his status as captain will ensure that he is handed an immediate return to the England starting line up as soon as he is fit, so he has no need to respond in the same way the Chelsea man does.
The Blues started the season in blistering form and that should continue this weekend. The West Ham betting suggests Chelsea could dish out another thrashing on Saturday.
With this in mind, the last thing Chelsea’s rivals would have wanted was an added reason for the side’s players to prove a point. With Terry a passionate man at the best of times, the desire to win back his place in the England team is likely to inflame that desire even further.
