Was Anelka Arrogant or Honest?

There’s mixed opinion about Nicolas Anelka’s reaction to his 18 match ban for France and either he’s arrogant and unprofessional or he’s spot on for sticking two fingers up at the mess that is the FFF. So what’s your take on it?

The mess that was France’s World Cup, had already seen Laurent Blanc suspend the entire squad of 23 players for a friendly against Norway this month and the FFF withhold bonuses and then on Tuesday, the FFF went on to dish out bans of 5 matches for Evra, 3 for Ribery, 1 game for Toulalan and an incredible 18 games for Anelka.

Anelka’s take on it, when informed of the suspension which effectively ended his international career, was to say “For me, this whole commission thing is a nonsense, a charade not to lose face. The so-called punishment has no relevance whatsoever because, for me, the French national team was an issue which ended on June 19 when I was kicked out of the training centre at Knysna. This is just to entertain the public, to turn the page because Laurent Blanc needs to be able to work in peace. These people are clowns. I am dying with laughter.”

Is that the statement of an arrogant man who thinks he’s bigger than the national side though or just the opinion of a player who thinks those in charge have used him as a scapegoat to mask their own incompetence?

Maybe I’m biased but for me, Domenech should never have been at the World Cup in the first place. He was carrying personal grudges against players right from the word go and let that cloud his judgement when it came to selecting the team, so is it any surprise his players didn’t respect him? Everyone but the French FA knew the mistake had been made before they even got out there and when it did bite the powers that be on the bum and descended into the mother of all farces, Anelka quite rightly lost his rag.

And now, he’s the one to carry the can the French FA weren’t prepared to bear the weight of – and quite rightly, seeing as he’d retired himself from France anyway – has laughed off the very public (and completely OTT) ‘punishment’.

Of course, if this was England’s national side, and an England player, maybe I’d feel differently but then again, if the English FA let a man like Domenech take my national side to a World Cup – maybe I wouldn’t!
