Yesterday we were reportedly in a battle against Manchester United for Wesley Sneijder, today however, it could be a one-horse race. Don’t worry though, the Holland international hasn’t blown us out, Fergie just doesn’t think he needs to add anything to last season’s squad of runners-up.
Reports earlier this week suggested United had made a £29m bid for Sneijder and that we were willing to better that offer with Ancelotti focused on retaining our Premier League title and hopefully improving on last season’s Champions League run.
However, it seems that surprisingly enough, the press may have got the first part of that wrong, with Fergie insisting “I believe the squad is stronger than last season with the
younger players having another year under their belts. I don’t know where those reports about Sneijder came from. How can anybody turn me down when I haven’t even made a bid?”
But have they got the second part of their story right? Are we after Sneijder? According to the Mirror, we’ve made contact via ‘third parties’ and Abramovich is reported to be ready to pay as much as £33m if that’s what it takes to bring in the Inter midfielder.
Certainly, we’ve made a bit of space in our midfield with the exits of Joe Cole, Michael Ballack and Deco, so it’s viable. And whilst Sneijder is said to be committed to Inter, we all know how drastically things could be set to change there. He might have enjoyed life under Jose Mourinho but I’d be surprised if he was convinced the arrival of Rafa Benitez will see Inter’s winning run continue.
Could actually be some truth in this one then?
