Chelsea: Last Minute Nerves?

As we prepare to play the first of our final two games of the season, I’m sure there’s plenty of you who, like me, are scared shitless that despite being in the better position of the two sides battling it out for the title, it could all come crashing down before the day is over.

I don’t want to be defeatist, in fact I’d love nothing more than to be amongst those of you who actually look forward to today’s game because you truly believe we’re about to win the league. But there’s something holding me back.  Maybe it’s because I know it wouldn’t be first time we’ve tripped at the final hurdle when we’ve been in with a shout against United? Or maybe the recent defeat to Spurs that narrowed our lead to just one point has left an untimely reminder of how badly we have performed on occasion this season? Or it could just be down to the sickening knowledge that it wouldn’t be the first time a game against Liverpool has left me feeling like my heart was ripped out at some point over the 90 minute period.

Whatever the reason, and it’s probably a combination of all the above with a hefty dose of pessimism thrown in, I wish I could just be grateful we’re even in the position we are. I mean, whilst I’m the first to admit that despite my reservations over Carlo Ancelotti’s ability to manage in the Premier League, he hasn’t done anywhere near as badly as I thought. If anything, even if you factor in United not being at their best this season, to come from Serie A to an ageing Chelsea side with no money on offer for transfers and a ban that would’ve prevented him buying any even if Roman had been feeling generous, and you can’t deny he’s done a pretty good job. Indeed, if you look at the football he’s had us playing in comparison to our previous defensive style and the amount of goals we’ve gleaned from it, then he clearly hasn’t done that much wrong.

I suppose if there is a criticism, it’s our apparent inability to sustain momentum – and that makes me more nervous than anything right now. There’s been a few times this season where we’ve been in good positions and whether it’s been complacency that’s affected the players motivation or whether that’s down to Ancelotti easing off on them too much, it’s ended up costing us crucial points and it’s not something we can afford in either of our last to games.

So, with 180 minutes of football to play and no error for margin at all, I guess the nail-biting is set to continue.
