Howard Webb The Villain For O’Neill

The usually shy and retiring Martin O’Neill appears to have stepped out of his shell this weekend following Villa’s 3-0 defeat to us in the FA Cup semi-final.

One of the Premier League’s introverts, O’Neill wouldn’t normally be one to pass comment but on this occasion felt a little word on the officiating was in order. Don’t get me wrong, I might have been laughing my arse off when Webb missed a blatant penalty shout from Agbonlahor right under his nose but if that sort of decision had gone against us, my language might have been a little more colourful than the Villa manager’s who says “It is incontestable. Even the Chelsea players knew, you could tell by their reaction it was a penalty. The referee has chosen to ignore it because of the possible consequences.”

I’m not sure I agree Webb bottled it because of the consequences, if anything I’d say it was probably because Agbonlahor did himself no favours trying to get Mikel’s shirt off his back before the foul anyway but I guess we owe Webb for that one either way.

You’d think that decision in itself would’ve been enough to test even the quietest of souls but unfortunately, it seemed Howard Webb just wasn’t having one of his better days as far as Villa were concerned. Because 74 minutes into the game, with Villa just the one goal adrift, a more discerning official might have had us down to ten men.

To say John Terry was lucky to remain on the field after his challenge on James Milner is probably the understatement of the week. A point O’Neill completely agrees with, insisting “It was an horrendous challenge on an England team-mate. James Milner is exceptionally lucky his career is intact. It should have been a straight red card. It could have been very serious. James is lucky to have got away with it. The fact his leg was in the air helped. I have spoken to the doctor who says he’s a very lucky boy.”

Can’t argue with that really.
