Can Gerrard Do What He Likes?

Well, what a surprise, Steven Gerrard won’t face any charges for his latest tantrum. Did we expect anything else though?

Whilst Liverpool quickly denied any wrongdoing, laughably claiming Gerrard was merely indicating he had been brought down twice, Rafa stole the prize for most feeble attempt at an excuse, stating “Sometimes you move your fingers. It was nothing. We are not considering it, it was nothing.” Then again, he could just mean it’s nothing – for Gerrard – who, after all does tend to have a lack of control over his hand movements.

Anyway, Rafa could have saved himself the embarrassment either way because despite Andre Marriner – and half the country – clearly seeing Gerrard flick him the v-sign and mouth a further obscenity following his justifiable booking for a challenge that isn’t exactly uncommon from the Liverpool captain, as ever, it’s being swept under the carpet.

FA chiefs have had a look as well and apparently “shared his (Marriner’s) view that it was a momentary show of frustration.” Oh well that’s ok then eh? Because by that token, any player on any pitch can abuse the ref if they get a bit pissed off right? Oh no wait, because that wouldn’t strictly adhere to the ‘Respect the Ref’ campaign would it?

So why exactly has he got away with it?
