Chelsea Kick Off New Year With 5 Against Watford

CHELSEA 5-0 WATFORD

So, after a pretty concerning last month to 2009, we kick 2010 off with a resounding win – and I didn’t even get to see it! Bloody typical but I’m sure I’ll enjoy the highlights later.

In the meantime, here’s a few snippets of what’s being said about the game:

MirrorfootballFA Cup holders Chelsea produced a five-star performance to destroy woeful Watford at Stamford Bridge and move effortlessly into the fourth round.  Two goals from Daniel Sturridge, his first for the club, inspired the Blues who were helped by an own goal from John Eustace, and strikes from Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard.

Chelsea dominated from the kick-off and goalkeeper Hilario was hardly tested as Championship Watford struggled to contain the Blues.  A superb first-half performance from FA Cup holders Chelsea put them in complete control of their third-round tie against woeful Watford at Stamford Bridge.  Chelsea were ahead in the fourth minute when Daniel Sturridge scored his first goal for the club from close range.  An own goal from John Eustace increased Chelsea’s lead and in the 21st minute Florent Malouda deflected in a Yury Zhirkov shot to give the Blues a handsome interval lead.

Chelsea made it 4-0 in the 64th minute with a superb Lampard strike.  The England midfielder was given time and space some 25-yards out and sent a thunderous rising drive into the roof of the net.  It was a fabulous finish from the Chelsea midfielder who had been at the centre of all the home side’s best moves.  Four minutes later it was 5-0 after Ashley Cole and Zhirkov combined superbly on the left wing to set him up.  Cole’s run into the penalty was followed by a clever cross to the waiting Sturridge who controlled the ball and slipped it beyond the helpless Loach.

SkySports.com Chelsea put their recent defensive woes behind them to coast to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup third round at Stamford Bridge.  Three first-half goals did the damage for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who swept aside a stunned Watford with a blistering start.  Sturridge started and finished the scoring as Chelsea produced a five-star showing against their Championship opponents.
