Wilkins backs Cole for World Cup

It isn’t just Chelsea fans that are happy to see Joe Cole back in action you know. Followers of England will be delighted that he is returning to full fitness again too.

Cole is one of the most like-able players in the English game and rarely has a bad word been said about him from a football fan in this country. Throw in the fact that he is one of the most skillful English players around and you can see why everyone is hoping for an end to his injury nightmare. He has been out for eight months with knee ligament damage, but is now back in first-team action.

Hopefully, this means that he will be available for Chelsea for the remainder of the current campaign. Then, this could result in a place in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the World Cup next summer, according to Ray Wilkins.

Cole is obviously desperate to recapture the form that saw him become a regular starter for England and therefore win a place on the plane to South Africa, something Wilkins is backing him to do.  The Chelsea assistant said that Cole’s knee is ‘far better prepared for football now’ after putting in a ‘phenomenal’ amount of work on getting himself right to play professional football again.  He then went on to say that a fully fit Cole will be ‘very much around the England squad’ because he can give Capello ‘something different’. He can play in any one of the ‘three diamond positions’ too, so overall his place shouldn’t be in doubt.

The only concern, as we know, is his fitness. Hopefully this latest comeback will be a permanent one though. He has worked so, so hard on getting fit and loves playing his football. It just wouldn’t be fair if he missed out on a World Cup would it?

Cole deserves to catch a break (probably not the best phrase to use!) and he deserves a bit of luck. A run in the Chelsea side will mean that a) Carlo Ancelotti will feel like he has a new signing and b) England will have their most skillful player to add to their World Cup squad and improve their World Cup betting odds.

Fingers crossed.
