After weeks of speculation – and the odd bit of stirring in the press – Chelsea have finally announced this evening that Yuri Zhirkov has signed on a three year contract.
It seems our new left-sided utility man has yet to master the language although he has said on the official website (presumably via an interpreter) “Any footballer would be happy to sign a contract with Chelsea, and at any time. I have been received very well here, and have been shown the base at the Cobham training ground, everything is super. Of course it is good when some of the players speak Russian, even today Petr Cech translated some bits and pieces, and I understand some words in English. Now I hope to learn English too”.
The fee for the 25 year is believed to be in the region of £18million, so let’s hope the new season shows he’s worth every penny.
