It’s probably not all that often I agree with Ray Wilkins although on this occasion, when it’s on the subject of Real Madrid’s influx of players, I think he’s got a point.
The Chelsea assistant manager quite rightly points out it’s not always a case of throwing a load of top players onto the same field and the magic being automatically produced and he says “Well once again Real Madrid are buying some wonderful gifted players, but you can only play with one ball though. It will be an interesting season, I will watch with interest what happens there. Kaka made his decision. There is a language barrier if he came to London. We will add to our players for sure. And we will compete for the Premier League.”
But it’s his point about these players not choosing to come to the Premier League that I agree with most. Wilkins says “For a foreign player it is difficult to play in the Premier League, so are these players taking the comfortable route by opting to play for Real Madrid? I don’t know, I’m just playing devil’s advocate, but the Premier League is still the best in the world.”
And it’s not just sour grapes because we haven’t signed any of these players but you have to wonder why they’ve taken the safer option of Real Madrid when they could be playing for clubs in the best league in the world. They’re certainly passing up the opportunity to really challenge themselves professionally. So maybe It’s because they don’t fancy either the competition for places or the weekly rigours of the world’s top league?
Either way it’s their decision I suppose.
