England take on Andorra tonight, looking to keep up their winning streak and following the weekend’s 4-0 win away to Kazakhstan, John Terry has given the supporters who were mad committed enough to make the trip, a mention. The Chelsea and England captain says “We had 1,500 fans going all the way to Kazakhstan so we know we are always going to get great support from the England fans but maybe tomorrow night is a chance to pay them back for all the hard work they give us with a good win. We owe it to ourselves to do it. None of us having been in this position before and it would be great to end the season on a high.”
Mind you, he’s hedging his bets a bit by making no promises, stating “I still think we have got improvements to make to the team, individually and collectively. At the moment we are going in the right direction and hopefully, if we do qualify, we can keep improving next year. It’s more difficult, year after year you see teams improving. We saw that when we played Andorra away last year. I think they will make it difficult. They’ve got two brothers who are big lumps at centre-half.”
Not the most flattering description of the opposition although his sentiments about his own team-mates are a little more complimentary, especially Gary Neville it seems, who he describes as a ‘role model’. Terry says of the Manchester United full-back “It’s fantastic to see his hunger. I’ve always said he’s been a great role model, to me included. He’s a great player to have round the squad. If players are out of the squad, ‘Gaz’ has shown if you work hard and play well then you’ll get your chance back in the side.”
The question is though, with the underground strike planned for today, how many of the travelling supporters will actually get there to see Terry, Neville and Andorra’s ‘big lumps’ play?
