Glen Johnson The First Of Many To Turn Liverpool Down?

So the latest we’re hearing on Glen Johnson seems to be that despite Liverpool being interested in him as well, his preference could be a return to Stamford Bridge.  Maybe not so surprising though, considering the prospects don’t look quite as favourable at Anfield now.

Fair play to them, they’ve just had one of their better seasons – in terms of league position anyway – although even with the squad they had available then, came away empty handed. So, with money looking a bit tight there now and Rafa probably facing a summer of disappointment if he’s hoping to compete in the transfer market, Liverpool might find they don’t quite have the pull they need.

It’s not as if Rafa hasn’t whinged about this before now (what doesn’t he whinge about?), he’s previously blamed the club’s apparent lack of conviction for him missing out on players like Didier Drogba, although I guess that was leveled at Parry who won’t be around now. Mind you, his job is one that is yet to be filled, so it’s not clear who’ll be doing the hiring and firing yet – or more to the point, where the money will be coming from, because with Liverpool rumoured to be losing something like £1million a month, it’s unlikely America’s answer to Bill and Ben will be throwing their dollars around.

Quite amusing really, seeing as it was always us expected to go tits-up, what with us just being Roman’s plaything and all. And now, whilst even in the middle of the credit crunch, after a couple of years of pretty conservative spending Roman appears ready to once again replenish our squad, ‘poor’ old Liverpool are going cap-in-hand to the bank just to hold off the debts they already have outstanding.  So Liverpool will have to hope Rafa’s good at making do because with a mere £10-15million available to him this summer, there won’t be another Torres coming in.

In fact, if anything, Rafa could end up losing rather than gaining players. He’s already seen last year’s target, Gareth Barry, go to Eastlands and he could well see Xabi Alonso exit during the summer as well. So what sort of player will he attract to Anfield – bearing in mind the promise of a spanking new stadium is another one that doesn’t look like being fulfilled any time soon now? We already know Barry’s gone to City and Glen Johnson might well come to us, so how does Rafa persuade his targets otherwise?

It’s not even as if they only have the likes of us, Manchester United, Real Madrid etc, to worry about though because in terms of finances (if nothing else), clubs like City and even Portsmouth now, can outbid any of us  in terms of transfer fees. Good job they’ve got their history to fall back on!
