Is it because going out to one of tonight’s finalists last year still hurts or maybe the fact that we were cheated out of it this year by the other side in tonight’s final is still too sore, probably a bit of both I guess, but whatever it is, it’s keeping the majority at Chelsea away from their plasma screens tonight.
Barcelona, as we know, spent enough to go through against us on the away goals rule and face Manchester United in the Champions League tonight – but John Terry says he won’t be watching it. The Chelsea and England captain says “I won’t watch the game. I’ll probably flick on to see the score at half-time and full-time but that’s it, otherwise I’ll just get angry. I’m probably not over it myself fully. We just felt as a group of players that the decisions went against us and we should be there. I’ll probably bath the kids and put them to bed and give them an early night.”
Didier Drogba, who’s rant at the ref after the semi final drew a lot more attention than his performance on the night, is another one who plans to focus more on family life tonight, stating “No I won’t be watching I think I’ll take my kids out.”
Nicolas Anelka, who let’s not forget missed our final penalty against United last season, is another player clearly still pissed off about the Barca game, says “I won`t be able to watch the Champions League Final. I don`t know about what the other players will do but I won`t. “Everyone knows what happened (in the semi-final) and so I don`t want to watch it. I don`t feel like I can watch it.” Whilst Chelsea keeper, Petr Cech, kept it much more succinct when asked whether he’d be tuning in tonight, with a very clear “No.”
Guus Hiddink, whilst still a bit narked with the manner in which we exited the competition, will have half an eye on the game although it sounds as if he’ll risk putting the kettle on mid-game if he fancies a cuppa. The Chelsea manager says “Bit by bit, day by day I’m getting a little bit rid of the anger but still if you push the red button you will get a little bit. I will be watching but if I get a phone call from my uncle at that time I will answer it, which I don’t normally do. It’s no lack of respect for Manchester United or Barcelona, it’s just the anger that remains.”
In fact, it sounds as if the only one at Chelsea who’ll have his feet firmly up in front of the screen will be Frank Lampard. Although he declined to pick a winner ahead of tonight’s game, the fans Player of the Year suggests he’ll be watching it out of interest for the simple reason it’s a great occasion and should be a great game.
If a little painful eh?
