CHELSEA 0-0 EVERTON
What is there to say? We had the chance of getting within a point of Liverpool tonight and maybe even finishing second this season – but that’s gone now.
Bloody frustrating game at home – which realistically, is exactly what put us out of the title race whilst Scolari was still around. So I guess it was fitting that any faint hopes – if not ours, then certainly those who write about these things – of Chelsea hanging onto the coat tails of the top two, are gone now.
The Everton defence was resolute all night, Petr Cech and Tim Howard both had decent games and aside from their goalkeeping, any chances either side did get, they didn’t take.
Everton should have had a penalty in the first half, with Alex bringing down Leighton Baines in the box – and maybe if they hadn’t been trying to put pressure on in the press prior to the game, then Halsey might have given it – still, it wasn’t given and I couldn’t help thinking ‘what goes around comes around’. We had a bit of a shout ourselves in the second half although it was only a half shout in truth and would’ve been harsh had the ‘ball to hand’ been given.
Drogba almost nicked it for us in time added on and although the keeper didn’t have a hope in hell of stopping it once the Ivorian had smashed it goalwards, sadly, the crossbar managed to stand up to the shot. It was just one of those nights. We looked too slow and too tired for the most part, which is hardly surprising off the back of our recent battles in the Champions League and FA Cup and maybe in the next day or two, I’ll console myself with still being in both competitions but for now I’ve got the right hump.
It was a pretty even game to be fair though and Everton deserved the point they went away with but if Moyes thinks we’ll play with as little enthusiasm and energy in a cup final, then he’d be kidding himself.
