Summer transfer speculation already underway

Everyone knows that the end of the Premier League season means one thing – the start of Sky Sports News churning out transfer rumour after transfer rumour concerning the major clubs. With no league games to talk about and no major tournament to cover, the only way a 24-hour news service that is dominated by football can be justified is to talk transfers.

There is the Ashes to contend with this summer and this could take a lot of the headlines, but the public still need their football fix and it will be given to them in the form of speculation. ‘Our sources are suggesting…’, ‘It is our understanding….’ and worst of all ‘let’s
cross live to Andy Burton…’ will be phrases that you hear on a regular basis in the coming months.

This is the way football is though and everyone enjoys the rumours to an extent. It’s just the way in which the media cover it which annoys me. The most recent transfer deadline day was unbearable to watch in my opinion. Shouting presenters, close-ups of a Blackberry phone and trying to convince us that Ryan Taylor making the move to Newcastle was big news. That’s all the day was. Your best bet is to stick on the news the next day and see what happened (in which case, you would still have had to cope with the will he/won’t he Andrei Arshavin saga).

Regardless of all this though, I’m going to be hypocritical and let you know which rumours are doing the rounds today as far as Chelsea are concerned. It can be interesting to read sometimes and it certainly beats Andy Burton (can you tell I don’t like him?) showing off about the contacts he has amongst the major clubs. Just read every so often and you will know everything that you need to.

So, the rumours – let’s take a look.

Chelsea are apparently keen on former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze.

Barcelona are considering making a move for Chelsea keeper Petr Cech in the summer.

David Trezeguet’s agent has revealed that Chelsea are one of a number of clubs tracking the striker.

Guus Hiddink has been asked about the possibility of Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der vaart joining Chelsea.

That’s pretty much your lot for today. Some interesting ones, but none of them hold enough weight to suggest that something could actually happen. It all seems irrelevant really though because who is going to be approaching players for Chelsea at this stage? Hiddink is adamant that he is only here until May, so it seems unlikely that any summer transfer policy has been discussed.

Oh well, let the continuous rumours begin…..

Blue is the colour is an honest insight to the World of Chelsea FC. Not always pretty, sometimes rather cynical, but always realistic.
