Defensive Injuries Costing Chelsea Again?

John Terry returns for tonight’s game at home to Boro and unsurprisingly, Carvalho misses out. What is it with them two this season, have they got some kind of phobia around playing together or what?

Where once we might have had an invincible partnership in our central defence, we now seem to have shifts on a rotational basis – with Carvalho and Terry bearing more of a resemblance to ships that pass in the night than a water-tight unit.

Terry has missed our last couple of games with yet another recurrence of the back injury that seems to have become a long-term problem now and you’d have to suspect he’s probably been rushed back in light of Carvalho’s latest absence. And likewise, the question has to be asked, did Carvalho come back a bit sooner than he should have, bearing in mind the recurrence of his hamstring injury? It’s an injury that’s seen him sidelined for a couple of months already this season and now sees him miss not just tonight’s game but the weekend’s game against Liverpool as well.

The fact that Carvalho and Terry have hardly even stepped onto the same pitch as each other, never mind spent 90 minutes in each others company since October seems to go right over Wilkins’ head though, with the Chelsea assistant coach stating “Ricardo is going to be out for seven to 10 days, which is very unfortunate for us because he has worked very hard to get back to a level of fitness. When you have a partnership like John and Ricardo, it’s very pleasant to have them playing every game but we are fortunate to have other guys who can come in to play in Alex and Branislav Ivanovic. We’ve had a lack of concentration on a few occasions and that has cost us goals but it’s when John and Ricky have played as well. We have enough quality and experience to cover these positions.

Obviously not enough quality to stop us conceding nine goals in our last six games though eh?

I mean seriously, it’s hardly football’s best kept secret that we’ve forgotten what the word defence means when it comes to set-pieces this season is it? So is it just coincidence that this has happened during a season where our central defence is about as stable as current exchange rate?
