John Obi Mikel: No More Red Cards?

John Obi Mikel made his 100th appearance for Chelsea last weekend and with the saga over his transfer finally reaching its conclusion this week, the 21 year old suggests he’s more than ready to focus on his future with the club.

The Nigerian midfielder has certainly been in his fair share of bother in the past, unsurprisingly seeing as he developed a habit of picking up red cards in his first couple of seasons. But fair play to him, he started this season saying he wanted to fill Makelele’s boots and with Michael Essien out through injury, he’s making the most of the opportunity.

And with contract negotiations intended to secure his immediate future at the club, Mikel is hoping he can keep his head as well as his place.

The Chelsea midfielder says “I thought about everything coming into this season – about how to improve my game, how to get myself in the team, and I thought about how to get the cards right.  This is a season where everything I thought about beforehand is happening.  I am happy with myself, I am happy about not getting cards because before by this time in the season I would have had one or two reds. So far it has been going well.”
