Has an official silly season been declared over Joe Cole or is it just the journo’s having a laugh? Because whilst I might have found the idea of our midfielder going to Aston Villa amusing, the latest offering from the press prompted a few choice words instead.
I mean, Joe Cole going to Liverpool? There’s something about that I just fail to find funny.
But, according to Sportsmail, Cole is worried he’s next in line for the “Chelsea Bench-warmer” title, so he’s ‘demanding assurances’ from the new boss that he’ll be spending more time on his feet than his backside in the coming season (and yes, I know I’ve left myself wide open for comments there!). Anyway Benitez, being the kind-hearted, not to mention astute man that he is (well, that and the fact that he hasn’t signed Gareth Barry) is ready to step in and rescue the England winger.
You see, despite already having been through the process of working his backside off to prove himself to Scolari’s predecessor’s, Sportsmail seem to have one of them ‘sources’ giving them the whisper that Scolari is yet to be impressed by what he’s seen from the midfielder. So much so in fact, that the whole Robinho thing all summer hasn’t actually been about increasing our attacking options, it’s really been all about replacing Joe Cole. Because he’s really that bad right?
To be honest though, this story almost had me worried – right up until it was suggested that even the ‘rehabilitation of Shaun Wright-Phillips’ has threatened Joe Cole’s place in the Chelsea side.
