Terry To Get England Captaincy?

England manager Fabio Capello is rumoured to be considering handing back the captaincy to John Terry in an effort to boost the Chelsea skipper after what has been the hardest week of his career. With England playing a friendly against the United States at Wembley on Wednesday, Capello apparently sees this as a timely gesture to nip any crisis of confidence in the bud.

Aware that losing out to Ferdinand and later missing out through injury, when Stevie Me got his hands on the armband, wounded Terry far more than any pair of studs ever could, Capello could both lift John’s spirits whilst at the same time, set any previous records straight. In Paris, the Chelsea captain was a tad peeved to say the least, when the Rio bombshell was dropped on him a little abruptly. However, the England boss has since suggested this was more about his poor command of English and less about slapping wrists, as was widely believed at the time.

Terry’s behaviour around that time most definitely didn’t do anything to dispel the rumours, with both his apparent inability to hide his dislike of officials and his public indignation at the loss of his role. But, having either taken a step back to consider his antics or simply read the daily condemnation in the press, Terry played out the end of the season with a composure more befitting an international captain and less an extra for Fight Club. Add to that, his recent apology and willingness to shoulder the responsibility for any perceived failure at club level, and it doesn’t seem to have done him any harm at all in terms of winning the England manager over.

Whilst a final decision is yet to be taken and Capello isn’t planning to make an announcement until tomorrow (Tuesday), he is aware that dragging it out won’t do Terry any favours. So, should Capello get all sentimental and give the Chelsea skipper a much needed boost in light of recent events, or should he only hand the armband back to Terry if he’s allowed it for keeps?
